When can dad feel the baby kick - Get tips now

Hvornår kan far mærke baby sparke - Få tips nu

For many, the first kick that dad can feel from the outside is a big moment – and something that can require a little patience. The baby's movements start early, but it's typically later in pregnancy that they become evident through the abdominal wall. Here's a practical guide to when it's often possible, what affects the experience, and how you can best "catch" the kicks together.

When can Dad feel the baby kick from the outside?

As a rule of thumb, Dad can often feel the baby kick from the outside around weeks 20-24. Some experience it earlier, while others only clearly feel the movements later. This depends on both the course of the pregnancy and common individual differences.

It can help to think of it this way: Mom can often feel the first internal movements before Dad can feel them with his hand. Only when the baby's movements become stronger and the uterus has grown more do the kicks typically become noticeable from the outside.

    A realistic goal

If you're aiming for the first "sure" kick to Dad's hand, weeks 22-25 are a more realistic time for many than very early in pregnancy.

When the first kick is felt – and why Dad often feels it later

The very first fetal movements can feel like small bubbles, fluttering, or "pops" to the pregnant person. These early sensations can easily be mistaken for, for example, gas, and they are rarely strong enough to be felt from the outside.

When the movements later become more pronounced (and the baby gets more space and strength), they will more often be felt on the outside. Therefore, weeks can pass from when Mom thinks "I just felt something" until Dad can feel a clear kick.

Fetal movements week by week – what to expect?

Instead of fixating on a specific week, it makes sense to have a range to navigate:

    • Around weeks 18-22: Many pregnant individuals start to become more certain about movements from within.
    • Around weeks 20-24: More couples experience kicks being felt from the outside for short moments.
    • Around weeks 24-28: For many, the movements become clearer and easier to "catch" with the hand.

If you are in doubt about what is normal in your pregnancy, the midwife is the right person to ask. They can also explain what is typically monitored in the phase you are in.

How do kicks feel – and how to increase the chance for Dad to feel them

When Dad finally feels the baby, it is often described as small clear nudges, a kick, or a rolling movement. It can vary from very light "taps" to more distinct pressures.

    Practical tips that often help

    • Place your hand where Mom feels the most movement and leave it there for a while (it may require calm and time).
    • Try when Mom is lying down or sitting relaxed, as movements are sometimes perceived more clearly during rest.
    • Wait a few minutes if the baby has just been active – sometimes more movements come in small "periods."

Avoid pressing hard on the stomach. A calm, warm hand and patience are usually best.

What if Dad can't feel kicks?

It's common for it to take time, and it doesn't in itself indicate anything negative about the baby. There can be perfectly natural explanations, such as the kicks hitting inwards, or the time of day not matching the baby's activity pattern.

Contact a midwife or maternity ward if the pregnant person experiences significantly reduced or altered fetal movements compared to what is normal for you, or if you are concerned. It's better to call one time too many than one time too few.

Products that can support comfort while waiting for the first clear kicks

As the body changes, good support can make it easier to relax and find peace, even when trying to feel movements together. Some find a support belt helpful, which can relieve the stomach and lower back in everyday life, e.g., Maternity Support Belt. And as breasts grow, a soft, wire-free solution can be comfortable, e.g., Gel-Support Maternity and Nursing Bra, which is designed as a supportive alternative without metal underwire.
