When can you feel life from the outside - See the weeks here

Hvornår kan man mærke liv udefra - Se ugerne her

For many, waiting for the moment when the baby's movements can be felt on the belly from the outside is a very concrete sign that there truly is "someone in there." At the same time, it's completely normal to feel doubt: Is it too early, is my belly "wrong," or am I doing something wrong? I will calmly guide you through what you can typically expect and what you can do in practice.

When can a partner feel movement from the outside?

For most, movement from the outside only becomes apparent well into the pregnancy. Typically, a partner or you yourself can feel clear movements through the abdominal skin around weeks 20 to 24, but there is wide variation.

    It depends especially on:

    • The baby's size and strength of movements
    • Where on the belly the baby kicks (some kicks "hit" outwards, others are felt mostly internally)
    • Whether you are lying still and relaxed, or active

A little tip from the "midwife brain" in me: If you want to try together, let your hand rest calmly in the same spot for a while. Many movements feel more like short "nudges" than big kicks at first.

First-time pregnant: when do you feel movement from the outside?

As a first-time pregnant woman, it can often take a little longer for movements to become noticeable from the outside. You might feel the first small internal movements earlier yourself, but external movements often come later because it requires more strength and better "contact" with the abdominal skin.

Practical tips to increase your chances of feeling it

    • Lie on your side or semi-reclined and give it 10 to 20 minutes in peace
    • Try after a meal, when the baby can often be more active
    • Place your hand where you most often feel internal movement

Anterior placenta: when do you feel movement from the outside?

If you have an anterior placenta (placenta at the front), it can act as a kind of "cushion" between the baby and your abdominal wall. This can mean that both you and others feel movement from the outside later, and that kicks feel more muffled for a period.

This is generally a normal variation, but it can make the waiting period longer. Here it helps to remember: It doesn't definitively say anything about the baby's well-being, only about how the movements transmit.

Fetal movements week by week: what's normal?

As the baby grows, movements change. Early on, it can feel like bubbles, small "flutters," or gentle pushes. Later, it often becomes more distinct nudges, rolls, and stretches, and for many, something that can be seen from the outside as small waves on the belly.

The most important thing is not to compare too much with others, but to get to know your baby's pattern. If you experience a clear and persistent change in movements later in pregnancy, you should contact your midwife, labor ward, or doctor for advice.

Tips for feeling movement from the outside and when to react

If you want to "catch" the movements from the outside, keep it simple:

    • Create peace around you and place a warm hand on your belly (not heat treatment)
    • Choose a time when you typically feel the baby most
    • Avoid repeated panic checks if there's a quiet spell; pauses can be normal

And the important bottom line: If you become worried or something feels significantly different to you, reach out and get it clarified. Better once too often than once too little.

Products for more comfort as your belly grows

As your belly gets heavier, extra support can make everyday life more comfortable. A pregnancy support belt can relieve your belly, back, and pelvis, especially when you are on your feet. For example, you can see the Maternity Support Belt or explore more options under Support Belts.
